AIR POLLUTION
The air we breathe could be harmful to us; it could even kill us. Worldwide, more than 3 million people die prematurely each year due to exposure to air pollution. By 2050, 6.6 million people are predicted to die prematurely every year worldwide. Shockingly, more people die from air pollution than malaria and AIDS/HIV. The majority of the air pollution deaths are caused by tiny chemical particles in the air that we inhale into our lungs. This can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and lung cancer which causes more than half of the 3 million deaths yearly.
There is another reason for the 3 million annual deaths caused by air pollution. Air pollution is not only caused by cars, factories and industries; but also from fuel for heating homes and cooking. Air pollution related deaths are different in each country. In Asia, including China and India; most people die from the fumes of the fuels used for cooking, heating, and waste disposal. In the United States and Europe, power plants and traffic were the cause for premature air pollution deaths.
I chose this article because I wanted to bring awareness to what air pollution can do to us. I was shocked because I didn't know so many people died from air pollution. I didn't even know that air pollution CAN kill us. I knew air pollution was an issue to the environment but didn't know it was harmful. If you think about it, we are indirectly killing ourselves. All the smoke from factories and cars are because of us, and so are the power plants and fumes from fuel. What we can do to reduce air pollution is drive hybrid cars, use solar panels and wind turbines to supply us power.
